The celebration of the few successes was a cover for the suffering of both the regular people and the brutal performance demands placed on athletes and competitors. Will there be an explaination for how she got anyone to go along with her idea in the first place? How did she get the first few ponies to agree to giving up their cutie marks? I wonder what this story's take on it will be, will her tragic backstory actually be tragic and not a minor bit of preteen angst that she blew out of proportion? Will she have some diabolical plot other then being the mayor of a hidden cult village via magically hobbling her victims and convincing them its a good thing? Putting aside things like how the inciting incident of her issue was a tiny moment that a dozen simple fixes other than devoting her life to gaining the skills to be a season antagonist on the show, her little cult is basically an excuse to validate her dislike of cutie marks and to force a community that will never leave her to exist. Which is a way that Starlight's village mirrors communism, everyone has to give up things for the greater good, except the person in charge of implementing that practice- though to be fair to Starlight Magic is her talent, she couldn't really take it away and still be able to use the spell on other ponies.Ĭanon Starlight's whole thing was wanting friends to stay by her FOREVER and more specifically blaming cutie marks for "forcing" them to leave. Real-life communism has a lot of problems, but "tearing down those with actual talent to make everyone equal" wasn't one of them, as far as I can tell. The USSR spent more money and resources than it could actually afford in elevating exceptional people and turning them into propaganda figures with which to show off.

Not to mention how such a central element of Soviet propaganda was celebrating people who (allegedly) accomplished great things in service to society, like Alexei Stakhanov (coal miner who supposedly mined 14 times his actual quota). Looking at the actual USSR, it CELEBRATED people who excelled. Just in "communism as seen by some of its least intelligent critics". You know, this is actually a thing that bugs me.Ī lot of media takes on communism go the Harrison Bergeron way - "everyone who excels will be brought down to the level of the mediocre!"Īnd the thing is.
